The Idol Of Comfort & The Call Of Christ

Jan 4, 2026    Brian Watts

This sermon kicks off our New Year’s series called Uncomfortable. In this series, we are seeking to challenge the belief that the comfortable life is the best life and to invite you to embrace the discomfort necessary for real growth. In this opening message from Luke 9, Jesus calls His followers not to ease, but to self-denial, cross-bearing, and wholehearted discipleship. We explore how comfort can quietly become an idol that keeps us from following Christ fully and why change rarely happens without discomfort. By looking at Jesus, who set His face toward the cross for us, we see that His call to follow Him is an invitation to walk the same self-giving, uncomfortable path He walked. This sermon invites us at the start of a new year to be comfortable with being uncomfortable so that we might find true life and joy.
