The Heart Of The Matter

People often say, "I want to get to the heart of the matter." In other words, what is the real issue? When we are sick, we don't just want to treat the symptoms but to fix the root cause. The Bible says that many of our outward struggles in life trace back to a deeper source: idols. When idolatry is mentioned we often think of primitive people bowing before statues. But idolatry is a problem that we all have because idols are god substitutes, and we are all prone to put things above God. John Calvin famously said that our hearts are idol factories. In this opening message, we’ll see how idols promise satisfaction but ultimately disappoint us, deform us, and distance us from God. Yet the good news is that God pursues idolaters like us in order to bring us back to Him, the One who can really satisfy us.
