God's Restraining Grace

Oct 12, 2025    Brian Watts

In 1 Samuel 25, David nearly commits a tragic sin in anger, but God restrains him through the wise and courageous actions of Abigail. This story shows us that God’s grace is not only seen in forgiving sin but also in preventing it. Just as David recognized that “the Lord has restrained me,” we too can look back and see moments when God, through His Word, Spirit, or people, has held us back from greater harm. Nabal’s foolishness reminds us of the danger of rejecting God’s anointed King, while Abigail points us to Christ, who interceded for us and bore our guilt on the cross. This passage calls us to thank God for His restraining grace, to humbly receive correction, and to be instruments of wisdom and restraint in the lives of others.
